Faulty or missing cartridge
Lexmark error 31 usually means that the printer cannot detect the toner cartridge or considers it faulty: the cartridge is missing, incorrectly inserted or its chip cannot be read.
What does this error mean?
An incorrectly inserted cartridge or one that does not match the model is the most common cause. On refilled cartridges, the condition of the chip can also play a part.
What can you safely try?
- 01Remove and reinsert the cartridge to make sure it is properly seated.
- 02Check that the cartridge is the correct type for your exact model.
- 03Switch the printer off at the main power switch, wait a few minutes, then switch it back on. Some temporary faults clear this way.

If the fault remains with a suitable, correctly inserted cartridge, call a technician.
