Toner low or empty
Lexmark code 88 indicates low toner or an empty cartridge. It is not a breakdown: replacing the cartridge clears it.
What does this error mean?
The message is based on the cartridge chip and toner usage. Gently moving the cartridge may yield a few more pages as a temporary measure, but replacement is the solution.
What can you safely try?
- 01Remove the cartridge, gently rock it from side to side, then reinsert it: it may print for a little longer.
- 02Replace the cartridge with the correct type for the printer.

If the printer reports a toner fault even with a new cartridge, call a technician: the detection system or a connection may be faulty.
