Laser unit (beam detect) fault
HP error 51 usually indicates a fault in the laser imaging unit: the printer does not detect the laser beam feedback. This fault stops the printer and typically relates to the laser/scanner assembly.
What does this error mean?
The laser unit relies on its optical path and sensor feedback. If beam detection is missing, the printer cannot safely write an image, so it stops.
What can you safely try?
- 01Switch the printer off at the main power switch, wait a few minutes, then switch it back on. Some temporary faults clear this way.
When should you call a technician?
If the code still appears after restarting, call a technician: replacing the laser unit is a job for a qualified technician.
